Memorial Day is a good time to honor those Merchant Marines who sailed the merchant ships in World War II, supplying the Allied forces with everything they needed to fight on foreign soil. The Merchant Marine suffered a higher casualty rate than any branch of the military, but were never fully recognized for their critical role in the war. Even to this day, they are still fighting for benefits promised to them but never received. These mariners should be recognized and remembered for their brave service, not just today, but every day. QUESTION FROM THE BRIDGE
I’m curious about the role of the Merchant Marine in World War II. Can you recommend any books on the topic? Peter S. Los Angeles, CA.
Yes, there have been some great books written on this subject. Here are just a few recommendations: The Mathews Men: Seven Brothers and the War Against Hitler’s U-boats, by William Geroux, Heroes in Dungarees: The Story of the American Merchant Marine in World War II, by John Bunker, and Patriots and Heroes: True Stories of the U.S. Merchant Marine in World War II, by Gerald Reminick.
