Is Your Paperwork In Order?PDF

This is just a reminder to keep your credentials current for the new year and submit your documents to the Coast Guard as soon as possible when such is required. It can save you aggravation and possible loss of employment in the future. Many of you may be in a holding pattern waiting for your credentials. As you probably are aware, the Coast Guard is experiencing a huge backlog, causing delays in processing documents due to the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW. Although the Coast Guard has issued statements that these delays should not prejudice sailors, their statements are not binding and some shipowners are denying employment to those who do not have their credentials in order. If you are in this situation, please refer to the following link for information: International Maritime Organization Publication

Question From The Bridge

Joe,
I submitted my paperwork to the Coast Guard but have been told that it’s still being processed. Can I still catch a ship? Joe B. Oakland, CA
.

Answer:
Probably not, but it is up to the individual companies. You can ask your union representative to get involved and they can take it up with the company. However, at the end of the day the shipowners are more interested in protecting their own interests rather than helping you, so they are unlikely to take the risk. Unfortunately, you may just have to be patient and wait for your credential.
